Immersing yourself in the culture of a language you are learning is considered one of the most effective ways to improve language skills. Studies show that students who are exposed to the language they’re learning in an immersive way, be it through a bilingual immersion programme or a study-abroad experience, exhibit higher levels of fluency.
By interacting with native speakers, experiencing local traditions, and exploring the nuances of the culture, language learners can enhance their language abilities while gaining a deeper understanding of the language in its authentic context.
Language Travel Tours organised a six-day expedition to Tours, France, enabling twelve members of the Aberdeen U3A French group to immerse themselves in French culture and enhance their language skills. We spoke to Isobel Botterill about her experience:
“I had the good fortune of staying with a charming, retired lady who provided not only warm hospitality but also the perfect environment to practise French. Every evening, we enjoyed delightful meals, conversing in French, which helped boost my confidence in speaking.
Though I’m at an intermediate level, I received great advice to keep it simple and soon managed to string together full sentences. The delicious food was also a highlight, and I couldn’t resist telling my host, “Votre cuisine allez me manquer!” (I’ll miss your cooking!).
Each morning, I attended classes at the Institut de Touraine, a short walk from my host’s home. The lessons covered engaging topics like French festivals, traditions, gastronomy, and the press. Our teacher spoke entirely in French, which was challenging but immensely rewarding.
Lunches were a treat, with our group exploring various restaurants and enjoying sumptuous three-course meals. A standout was ‘Le Cheval Blanc’ at Bléré, where we dined on exquisite Cordon Bleu cuisine before visiting the beautiful Château de Chenonceau.
Afternoons were reserved for sightseeing, and we visited three stunning châteaux: Chenonceau, Chambord, and Amboise. Chenonceau was my favourite, with its picturesque setting on the Cher River, where our boat sailed right through one of the arches under the Château. The history of the Château, once given to King Henry II’s mistress Diane de Poitiers and later taken over by Queen Catherine de Medici, added a fascinating layer to our visit.
We also enjoyed two wine tastings at local wineries, sampling traditional sparkling wines and savouring French gastronomic delights. The tastings were both informative and delicious, rounding off our afternoons perfectly.
Overall, this trip was a fantastic way to improve my French and gain a deeper understanding of French culture. I highly recommend it to anyone eager to enhance their language skills while enjoying the beauty and charm of France.”
David, who also joined the group on their trip, said “the holiday was excellent and well planned. All of the places we visited were very interesting as was the river boat trip. Agathe ran the class very well, kept us under control and did some good actress bits. The subjects were ideal and varied along with a questionnaire visit to the closed / open market area, and all eateries varied and were excellent.”
