From Germany to Aberdeenshire: Colin’s High School Stay in Scotland

A High School Stay in Scotland is the perfect opportunity for international students to live like a local, improve their English, and experience life in a Scottish secondary school. This term, we were delighted to welcome Colin from Germany, who joined us for a term as a local pupil in Aberdeenshire.

Settling in with a Host Family

Colin was warmly welcomed to Stonehaven, a picturesque coastal town in the North East of Scotland. His host family, including two lively host sisters, helped him feel at home from day one. Exploring the town together, sharing favourite shops, and meeting neighbours gave Colin the chance to quickly settle into Scottish life.

“On my first day of arriving in Stonehaven, I was greeted very warmly by my family. My two new host sisters were full of questions which helped me a lot to get over the first awkwardness… I can’t say that I was bored at all because the girls were always eager to play or do something.” – Colin, Germany

Living with a host family is one of the most rewarding aspects of a High School Stay in Scotland. Students not only practise English daily but also become part of the community, sharing meals, activities, and experiences.

School Life in Aberdeenshire

As a local pupil, Colin joined a Scottish secondary school where he quickly made friends. One of his classmates showed him around and introduced him to others during breaks, helping him adjust with ease.

He didn’t stop there, Colin also joined a local football club, started jiu jitsu classes, and even found a music teacher to continue his trumpet lessons. These activities gave him the chance to meet new people, stay active, and keep up with his hobbies while abroad.

“In general, I would highly recommend getting your afternoons planned out. It helps with finding people with similar interests and with not getting bored. My first week was pretty good.” – Colin, Germany

Exploring Scotland’s Coastline

No High School Stay in Aberdeenshire would be complete without exploring the stunning local scenery. On his very first weekend, Colin walked the coastal path to Dunnottar Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic historic sites. With breathtaking sea views and dramatic cliffside ruins, it was the perfect introduction to Scotland’s natural beauty.
